A challenging mission

Harvard Business Review published an article entitled The Eight-Word Mission Statement which discusses a challenge presented by Kevin Starr of the Mulago Foundation…produce a mission statement in eight words or less.  A simple construct of VERB, TARGET and OUTCOME.  The results are interestingly accessible:

  • Improve African children’s health
  • Save endangered species from extinction

A mission statement is a clear statement of purpose.  Follow this challenge and you won’t go far wrong in delivering a succinct statement of exactly what your organisation is about.  This won’t only benefit your clients it just might help your employees as well.  Then once you have encapsulated your purpose begin the task of working out how to measure progress.
